Stillwater River

about

“The realm of fairy-story is wide and deep and high and filled with many things: all manner of beasts and birds are found there; shoreless seas and stars uncounted; beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever-present peril; both joy and sorrow as sharp as swords.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien

I grew up walking distance from the Stillwater River in Western Ohio. My earliest memories of it are from the mid 80s. Near where I lived, the river lay in a deep wooded ravine that seemed far more remote than any other place in the area. I heard about scary things that happened there, but despite a little bit of fear that we all have for wild places, my memories there are all positive. This piece aims to capture all of the above.
